Dare To See Less

The most powerful thing you can do today is to decide what not to see.
You’re drowning in an ocean of information. Not just because there’s too much information in the world, that goes without saying. You’re drowning because you haven’t decided what to ignore.
Every article. Every video. Every post. Every breaking news alert. You try to see it all. In trying to see everything, you end up seeing nothing.
You might think that you are well informed but that couldn’t be further from the truth. You’re overwhelmed with information.
The Illusion of Being Well-Informed
Being informed =/= consuming as much as possible. Being informed simply means “having or showing knowledge of a subject or situation“. Reading the news everyday, keeping updated by using Twitter, listening to whatever podcasts you can get your hands on.
Does all of this truly make you informed? Or is it an overload of information that does nothing but make you anxious about what you can’t control?
You know what happened today. But you’ve already forgotten what you read yesterday. You’ve seen 1000 headlines but all you have is surface level information. You’ve gone wide instead of deep. It’s just noise.
What Does Seeing Less Mean?
Seeing less doesn’t mean you’re ignorant. It just means you have curated what enters your headspace.
If something is actually important, you’ll hear about it. You know you will.
It means filtering what is noise and what is music. Music is a sweet sound, noise is just a racket. Unfollow what is unnecessary, always asking “Does this matter?” when you scroll. Trust that you don’t need to see everything to understand what is important or what matters.
Why This Is Harder Than It Sounds
This feels backward. You’re choosing to miss things on purpose. What if you miss something? How can you make a decision without seeing each perspective available? FOMO (fear of missing out) keeps you consuming. The fear keeps you scrolling.
A question to flip that on its head, how much of what you consume really matters? Did it matter today? Will it matter tomorrow?
You also need to reframe this. You miss out on 99.99% of what happens on a daily basis on Earth. You only see the 0.01% that your algorithm shows you. The only difference between missing things is relying on your algorithm to show you and relying on yourself to filter it out.
What To Do
Delete apps you check compulsively. Not just “use them less”. Delete them. Being unable to delete them is a glaring sign that you don’t control what you see and you can’t control your use of the app.
Unfollow what doesn’t serve you. You can only concentrate on so many things at once.
Stop reading the news. It’s designed to keep you anxious, not informed. If something matters you’ll find out about it.
Turn off notifications. A notification is someone else deciding what is important for you to see. You don’t need that. Decide for yourself.
Create more than you consume. You need to be making something. You’re just filling your brain with other people’s ideas. Ten hours of consuming leaves you with nothing. One hour of creation leaves you with something.
What Do You Gain?
Clarity: You can think clearly when you’re not drowning in noise. You form original thoughts, not an opinion from what you saw 5 minutes ago.
Presence: You are really in the moment right now. No external distractions trying to pry you away.
Confidence: You can begin to trust your own judgement. You gain the ability to realise what matters to you without needing your feed to tell you.
Mental Space: Your brain carves out space for your own ideas. It becomes possible to be bored. Your headspace isn’t filled with what other people consider urgent.
How Does This Relate to Tech Consciousness?
Tech consciousness isn’t just about using tech intentionally. It’s about giving yourself the ability to refuse what you’re being served and choose your own path.
Infinite scroll, recommendations, autoplay, notifications. All these features are designed to show you more.
Daring to see less is a form of resistance. It’s declaring “I decide what enters my head. No one else does”.
You go from being a passive consumer to an active filter. The job of the filter is to let almost nothing through.
Most of what exists doesn’t deserve your attention. Why? Your attention is the most valuable thing you have. You’re giving it away to anything that pops up. Stop.
See less. Think deeper. Create for yourself.

In that gap between the stimulus and the response, you made the choice. Minuscule but tangible. The choice exists. You can ignore a notification, you can turn off your notifications, you can pick up the phone. Your autonomy depends on what you choose...
